The Polish Bibliotherapy Society: About Us

How The Polish Bibliotherapy Society came into being

Bibliotherapy as a curriculum subject at SKIBA – State College of Culture Animation and Library Studies – has been taught almost since the very beginning of the School’s existence. In November 1997, a year after the first decade Graduates’ Reunion took place, the inaugural bibliotherapy conference was organized at SKIBA, titled “Bibliotherapist: an emerging vocation.” It was then that the formation of a society was postulated, to bring together and consolidate individuals and groups interested in bibliotherapy, and to foster the growth of this emerging field of studies. Soon afterwards, in November 1997, a draft statute was prepared by a provisional board, which led to the formal registration of the newly created unit as The Polish Bibliotherapy Society (PBS) and to the further procedural steps towards establishing the official Statute and Board of the Society. (The current President of The Polish Bibliotherapy Society is Genowefa Surniak.).
In September 2009, The Irena Borecka Bibliotherapy Reading Room was inaugurated at SKIBA, where PBS’s meetings are regularly held.
